FRANK SHORTER TALKS ABOUT HIS MARATHON TRIALS, AND THIS YEAR'S TOO

Frank Shorter is the only runner to win two USA Men's Olympic Marathon Trials, the first in a deliberate tie with Kenny Moore in 1972 and the second in 1976 when he pulled away from a hobbling Bill Rodgers. Shorter ran just as strong in the subsequent Olympics, winning a gold at Munich in 1972 and a silver in Montreal 4 years later when a possibly-drug-assisted East German beat him.

When we spoke yesterday about the Trials, it didn't take long for Shorter to get worked up to his old fighting pitch. After about 10 minutes, he said, "I'm getting excited to talk this much about the Trials. I start to think about the training I'd be doing if I were running this year in Central Park. I'd be out there doing hard hill repeats with downhills on the other side, and then a sharp curve around a corner."

Shorter didn't win all his Marathon Trials, however. In 1968, when no qualifying time was required, he decided to enter the high-altitude Alamosa CO Trials in mid August. I had been living in an Alamosa State dorm for a month, training with a couple dozen other USA marathoners who had received room and board from the USOC so we could get used to the altitude.
