Rivalry Renewed: U-M, Ohio State To Meet in "The Dual"

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- One aspect of the heated Michigan-Ohio State rivalry will be rejuvenated in January 2008 with the reinstatement of "The Dual," pitting the University of Michigan men's track and field team against its counterpart from OSU in dual-meet competition.

Earlier this month the two schools agreed to a three-year commitment to face each other in one indoor dual meet in Ann Arbor and one outdoor dual in Columbus, Ohio, each year. The agreement runs through the 2010 season. The first indoor dual meet will be held Jan. 19, 2008, at the U-M Indoor Track Building, and the first outdoor meet will take place April 5, 2008, at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus. A traveling trophy, "The Dual" pennant, will be awarded to the winning team.

The agreement revives a series between two programs with storied histories. The original dual meet between the two schools occurred May 18, 1907, in Ann Arbor, and the rivalry meet was primarily contested in the 1920s through the 1950s, but it has not been held since 1993.

"Both programs are very excited about this inaugural renewal and upcoming series" said U-M head coach Ron Warhurst. "It's going to be a great meet, in particular this year, because the teams are so evenly matched."

Michigan, which has won 26 Big Ten indoor team titles and 30 conference outdoor championships, and Ohio State, which owns nine Big Ten titles (five outdoor, four indoor), have produced icons of the sport in Eddie Tolan and DeHart Hubbard of U-M and Jesse Owens and Mal Whitfield of OSU. Over the last 100 years the two programs have combined for 25 Olympic gold medals, 375 All-Americans and 753 Big Ten champions.

The rivalry has also been spiced with several greats from the football gridiron, including U-M's Butch Woolfolk, Tyrone Wheatley and Braylon Edwards and OSU's Robert Smith and Paul Warfield.
