Coach Terrence Mahon On Deena Kastor’s 4-Year Olympic Plan

October 23, 2007—Just over two weeks ago Deena Kastor won the Tufts 10K road race to take her fifth USATF title of ’07 and the 24th of her career. This year Kastor, 34, took the U.S. crowns in cross country, the 15K, marathon, track 10,000 and road 10K in a notable return by the Athens Olympic marathon bronze medalist to shorter racing. Ever the perfectionist, Kastor rued her 5th-woman finish in the Boston Marathon, even though it brought her the U.S. title at that distance, and she was less than completely pleased with her 6th-place finish in the World Championships 10,000 in Osaka. But T&FN figured all the shorter races were part of a plan and decided to ask Kastor’s coach, Terrence Mahon, about it.
